Activity of the Week – Beach Sensory Tub

Let your preschooler enjoy the last days of summer with a beach sensory tub. Sensorial awareness is so important for young children, and the beach sensory tub from Counting Coconuts is a great way to bring a bit of the beach home.

In addition to giving directions for making the beach sensory tub, Counting Coconuts has directions for making sandy playdough. That adds another element of creativity and fun to the “beach” experience.

The beach sensory tub is an activity my children would have loved when they were preschoolers. It could easily have science extensions as well. I often had a container with sand for Will and Christina to dig in for buried treasure. Seashells or fossils were favorite treasures. Then Will and Christina matched each seashell or fossil with an identifying card that had a picture of the seashell or fossil along with its name.

On Counting Coconuts, you’ll find photos and directions for making sensory tubs about once each month. Here’s a link to all of Counting Coconuts’ themed sensory tubs.

Does your child have a favorite educational activity using sand?

Update:

Wow! This is too good to be true! Counting Coconuts just published “Beach Themed Activities”  with practical life, sensorial, language, math, AND art activities! And here’s a link to another wonderful post Counting Coconuts published four days ago: “Summer Nature Table.”

My kids love to cook with sand, water and any other ingredient they can get. Usually it is grass, flowers and small sticks!

Thank you for your kind comments on my recent posts, Deb! I have so, so much to learn about homeschooling yet, but I’m just taking it as it comes and doing what feels right for us. So far so good!

Thanks also for adding my other links to the Activity of the Week post – I’m truly flattered! I typically create my themed sensory tubs at the beginning of the month with similarly themed Montessori activities a week or so later. For September I’ll be doing a fall/apple theme. 

Thanks for your comment, Joyce! I love finding great activities online like the themed sensory tubs. It’s exciting how many ideas are easily available for homeschoolers now – and how wonderful for the children being homeschooled!

This looks like a lot of fun. Makes me want to make one for myself..put it in the hot sun for a while, then dig my bare toes down into it and enjoy an iced cold lemonade.

Now that’s a great idea! I think I could use one as well – especially if it had that lovely Bermuda sand!
