Montessori Monday – Living and Non-Living

It’s Montessori Monday and time for one of the early science activities in Montessori education – living and non-living! After learning about living and non-living, preschoolers study plants and animals and the classifications of plants and animals. There are many helpful resources online to introduce your preschooler or class to the concepts of living and non-living.

Living and Non-Living Resources

Montessori at Home shows Zoology and Taxonomy starting with living and non-living.

One Hook Wonder uses Karen Tyler’s album presentation (from World Wide Montessori Online) to introduce Living and Non-Living (including the four characteristics of living things – photo at top of this post) and Once Living. The living/non-living/once-living presentations are from Karen Tyler’s botany album.

Montessori Tidbits also introduces Living and Non-Living based on Karen Tyler’s album presentation.

Jojoebi has free Living and Non-Living 3-Part Cards.

Talibiddeen Jr. Companion Blog has a free printable Living Non Living Sort.

Homemade Montessori has free printable Living and Non-Living and 5-Kingdom Cards.

ETC Press has free Living and Non-Living, Plant and Animal Cards.

My Montessori Journey has Living and Non-Living Work with a printable sorting page.

Montessori for Everyone has Living and Non-Living Matching Cards and Advanced Living & Non-Living Set (for 3rd grade and up) available for purchase.

Counting Coconuts made a felt pouch for Living and Non-Living Cards.

It’s easy to put together hands-on living and non-living activities. And it’s a great start to helping your child understand science. :)

Montessori Training Course and 12 Montessori Albums Giveaway!

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. SEE BOTTOM OF POST FOR ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNER!

I’m so excited to announce another fabulous giveaway sponsored by Karen Tyler at World Wide Montessori Online! I don’t do a lot of giveaways … but Karen Tyler sponsors AMAZING giveaways! I was fortunate to host one of Karen’s course giveaways before, and I’m VERY HAPPY to be able to give another lucky person the chance to win Karen’s Montessori training course and 12 Montessori teacher training albums!

I wrote before about Karen Tyler’s Montessori Training Course and gave you ways to get her wonderful geography album and 3-part botany and zoology cards for free. In Karen’s training course, not only do you receive 12 albums with over 5,000 pages of activities and presentations, but you also receive lectures and can correspond with Karen, a certified AMS teacher, throughout your course.  You may schedule Skype consultations with Karen as well. And even though it’s a course that gives you huge amounts of helpful information, there’s no pressure … there aren’t tests or assignments, and you can take the course totally at your own pace.

Karen will be starting a new Montessori Training Course on September 1. I highly recommend her training! Read about it in my earlier post. Karen also has all the details at World Wide Montessori Online.

Montessori Course and 12 Training Albums Giveaway Winner!

Worldwide Montessori Online

The Montessori Course and 12 Training Albums Giveaway ended at 11:59 last night. At 12:00 a.m., I used “And The Winner Is” WordPress plugin to choose the winner.

CONGRATULATIONS to Kelly! Here’s the wining entry/comment:

We do many montessori activities at home as we homeschool our preschooler. I am also a part of a homeschool co-op that uses much of the same philosophies and ideas.

Karen Tyler will send you everything you need for the course and albums, Kelly!

Thank you so much to everyone who entered the giveaway! I wish you all could have won such a fabulous prize. I can’t thank Karen enough for her generosity and for being the amazing person and teacher she is.

Even if you didn’t win the giveaway, I truly believe that Karen’s course is one of the best deals in the world.  Here’s a link to my original post that gives more information about Karen’s training.

Here’s a bit more Karen wrote recently about her course:

The beauty of this Pre-Primary course (2-6 years old) is that you can access the information from a yahoo group site any time during the day or night to download the presentations/lessons to add to your manual/album. You don’t need special software in order to participate. There isn’t a time limit or assignments that are due so there isn’t any pressure. Some of the students make comments or ask questions by posting to the group and others do it to me privately and some I don’t hear much from at all….

All of the albums are written for the 2-6 year old age group and are included in the course (10 out of the 12 albums extend their subjects out through lower elementary). The albums are complete with step by step presentations. For example, the Practical Life Album has 346 pages of lessons and dozens of pictures you can copy in our on-line photo album! Each album comes with its own set of Student Tracking Forms which make it easy for you to chart the progress of each child. If you request information from me, I will send you the class syllabus, set of table of contents from the albums/manuals and several sets of examples (includes a free set of nomenclature cards).

During this course, I address what it means to follow in the footsteps of Maria Montessori. I guide each of you as you discover and continue to grow into this “peaceful” way of living.

If you’re interested in Karen’s Montessori Training Course that starts on March 1, be sure to email her at karen@amontessorimarketplace.com. Tell her you came from my blog to get a detailed letter about the class, all the Table of Contents for the albums, and a free set of Botany and Zoology cards! If you haven’t already signed up for my newsletter, sign up in the sidebar and you’ll get Karen’s wonderful Montessori geography album for free!

Montessori and Natural Parenting

Christina (2) and Will (7) absorbed in Montessori-style natural learning, 1992.

This has been a week filled with Montessori inspiration for parents (although it can be used for teachers as well).

On Monday, I featured the Activity of the Week – Friendship Flower Activities with a free Montessori download from North American Montessori Center’s 3-6 Montessori Homeschool Program. The download contains activities appropriate for Montessori peace education and/or the 100 Acts of Kindness Project.

Yesterday, I started an amazing giveaway with an offer from Karen Tyler, who has a wonderful online Montessori course with printable albums that has helped many parents learn how to use Montessori methods with their children. Here’s the giveaway post link: Giveaway – Montessori Training Course and 12 Montessori Teacher Training Albums!

I’m also at Natural Parents Network with a post on Montessori and Natural Parenting. The article starts:

Maria Montessori, the Italian physician who founded the Montessori Method of education in the early 1900s, was ahead of her time in promoting many principles now considered part of natural parenting. Dr. Montessori encouraged ecological responsibility, love of nature, and healthy living. I’m writing today, though, about her contributions regarding attachment parenting and natural learning.

Please join me at Natural Parents Network for my entire article on Montessori and Natural Parenting.
