Kids in the Kitchen on Thanksgiving

Pinterest - Kids' Thanksgiving Activities - Food

Thanksgiving … love it! What a perfect time for family, gratitude, memory-making, and kids in the kitchen!

At our house, Will and Christina helped prepare part of the meal and set the table when they were little. As they grew older, they took responsibility for a lot of the grocery shopping, preparing our cranberry salad (post with printable vegetarian recipes), helping with every dish, setting the table, and getting the food on the table. If you’d like to know more about how my family traditionally spent Thanksgiving when Will and Christina were growing up, here’s my post: Homeschool Thanksgiving.

The more you can help your children prepare for Thanksgiving ahead of time and let them be part of the planning and preparations, the less stressful and more fun Thanksgiving Day will be for all of you. And your children will feel a special sense of pride and happiness in having an important role in the Thanksgiving preparations.

Here are links to some posts I’ve published with lots of resources to help your children truly be a part of preparing and enjoying the Thanksgiving meal:

I have a post on Montessori-Inspired Gratitude Activities, which can be used to help plan a gratitude activity for the Thanksgiving meal.

Pinterest - Kids' Thanksgiving Activities

My Kids’ Thanksgiving Activities Pinterest board contains gratitude activities, kids’ crafts and other Thanksgiving activities, Thanksgiving placemats and other place setting ideas, and fun Thanksgiving foods for kids. My Pinterest board contains an overwhelming number of activities, but the beauty of Pinterest is that you can choose what your eye is drawn to. And you can have your child help you choose an activity as well!

Everyone will feel more comfortable if your child is prepared to meet relatives: How to Help Your Child Feel Comfortable Greeting Relatives.

Pinterest - Table Setting

Your child can learn to set the table beforehand. Just use one of the simplest ideas if you have little time to prepare: Table Setting.

Give your child some basic introductions to table manners before the Thanksgiving meal: How to Teach Your Child Table Manners for Holiday Gatherings.

Most children are excited about the upcoming holiday and will be happy with extra Thanksgiving-related activities. Montessori philosophy encourages you to prepare your child with lessons and activities reinforcing important skills. It’s fine to take time from your regular curriculum to truly prepare your child for an extra special Thanksgiving dinner.

Have fun – and Happy Thanksgiving! :)

Montessori Monday – Montessori-Inspired Gratitude Activities

We obviously wouldn’t have Thanksgiving without gratitude, and I love to place extra emphasis on gratitude throughout November. Even if you haven’t started gratitude activities yet, it isn’t too late to prepare one or more gratitude activities for home or school.

You can always have a Thanksgiving display, nature tray, or nature table with a gratitude theme. Along with Thanksgiving activities, To the Lesson! has a lovely gratitude-focused Thanksgiving display in the classroom.

Here are some more Montessori-inspired gratitude activities found online:

Last year, I had a Montessori Gratitude Jar for Year-Round Gratitude as an activity of the week.

The Young Masters Little Wisdom Discovery Program was designed for 4-8 year olds in Montessori schools. The curriculum is being offered as a free download from Dream a World!

Here’s a post about the program: What is The Hidden Treasure? Montessori kids find out at New Jersey Montessori School.

Here are some videos from the program:

Young Masters Appreciation Video (game/song)

Young Masters Hidden Treasure Video (“Everyday is a Gift” song)

“Secrets of the Heart” Used in an Elementary School

“Thank You Song” from Dream a World

In addition to gratitude lessons, the curriculum has lessons on friendship, imagination, courage, creativity, and love.

Here’s a great song from the friendship lesson:

“Little Seeds of Kindness” (just LOVE this video!)

You could always include that in your gratitude activities … showing acts of kindness as a way to express our gratitude for all we’ve been given.

Cathleen Haskins has a post at Montessori Life called Teaching Gratitude: Tools for Inner Peace and Happiness. There are pages of gratitude activities, including making “wants” and “needs” cards and an explanation of the importance of caring for fragile and precious materials.

Activity of the Week – Montessori Gratitude Jar for Year-Round Gratitude

Montessori Gratitude Jar
Montessori Gratitude Jar

I love gratitude activities – at Thanksgiving and all year round. Jocelyn Scotty wrote about a Montessori-inspired gratitude activity in an article at Suite101.com titled “How to Create a Montessori Gratitude Jar.” Directions are given in the article on how to prepare and present the gratitude jar in either a classroom or family setting.

Many families and classrooms have gratitude activities throughout November. The Montessori gratitude jar is a language-development and gratitude activity that’s meant to be used year-round. You only need a beautiful container, blank slips of paper, and a pencil to start a gratitude jar for written expressions of gratitude. The colors of paper can be changed throughout the year. Here’s a lovely way the jar can be opened on Thanksgiving and a new jar started the day after Thanksgiving:

On Thanksgiving or another special day, many families remove all the slips and read them aloud prior to sitting down to enjoy a meal together. Parents and children alike love to read through each slip and relive the memories of the past year together. The slips for the year are then glued or taped into a family memory journal and made into a keepsake. The Gratitude Jar starts anew the next day, ready for new feelings of thankfulness and gratitude to be recorded.

For more Thanksgiving activities, here are two more articles by Jocelyn Scotty called “Thanksgiving Montessori activities for young children” and “Montessori Thanksgiving Activities for Children.”

UPDATE: There are more ideas for gratitude activities in my post at Raising Figure Skaters: How to Help Your Kids Have an Attitude of Gratitude.

Does your family have a special gratitude activity for Thanksgiving or throughout the year?
