20 Outdoor Phonics Activities

June 20, 2014 By Deb Chitwood

I have a roundup for you with lots of great ideas for reinforcing phonics skills during the summer.

20 Outdoor Phonics Activities

Montessori Phonics

Phonics is a very important part of Montessori education, and outdoor games during the summer (or any time the weather allows) can be a fun way to reinforce phonics skills.

Note: In Montessori education, we teach phonetic sounds before letter names. For any of the activities below, I would emphasize the letter sounds. Also, if you want to follow Montessori tradition, make the letters lowercase for your activities. Of course, set up your activities however works best for you and your child or students.

You can learn more about letter sounds and presenting phonetic activities through the links in this post: DIY Beginning Montessori Phonics for Preschoolers.

    Spray the Letter
Set up the activity by using chalk to write some phonemes on a surface in your outdoor area. Give the children a spray bottle filled with water and ask them to find and spray the phonemes. You can extend this by asking them to find and spray the phonemes needed to spell given words.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful information— I hope that the Alphabet Box 2 giveaway is for 2014. Great and wonderful idea for the classroom. I am a lead Teacher in a rural Louisiana Head Start. We have been given no funds for supplies for our classroom. So everything is out of pocket or we have to find donations. I plan on using your sand letters and creating a Letter Box. I appreciate all of your ideas and support.
    Thank you
