Discover Your Family’s Natural Learning Style

May 6, 2010 By Deb Chitwood 16 Comments

I think each family has its own unique learning style. I don’t mean visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learning style but a way of learning that the whole family enjoys together.

Whether through genetic similarities, common environment, or both, families can usually find meaningful and enjoyable ways to learn together. Terry’s and my children are 20 and 25 now, but we still enjoy the same learning activities.

For our family, our learning style together came naturally. We all love reading together and traveling together.

Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.

– Emilie Buchwald

We were homeschoolers in a house with walls lined with bookcases filled with books. We used Montessori principles and discovery learning as well, but some of our best memories are from sitting together on the couch and reading aloud.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

On the road again

Goin’ places that I’ve never been

Seein’ things that I may never see again

And I can’t wait to get on the road again.

– Willie Nelson

As for traveling together, it didn’t matter if we were just taking a local field trip. Near or far, our travels led to many happy and educational experiences. For us, as long as we could reach a place during a one- or two day car trip (totalling 18 hours or less), we were up for a new adventure. Of course, many of our trips included skating competitions or trips to visit grandparents. To this day, we love family road trips!

Have you discovered your family’s natural learning style? What sorts of educational activities do you enjoy doing together as a family?

Thanks so much, Heather! I love seeing how families have their own special activities and learning styles. I’m always fascinated that what work so well for one family might not work at all for another. Diversity makes life so much more interesting!

Stopping by from the Hip Homeschool Hop, although I already am a regular reader and follower of your lovely blog.

As far as our family's natural learning style, we are about hands on, interactive learning, with loads of block play, art projects, field trips and outdoor experiences in the mix.

Neat post! Very interesting to read and to reflect upon…

    Have a nice week!

I have never heard anyone say that a family has it's own learning style before, but I couldn't agree more! We love to laugh in our house and use humor to teach/learn all of the time. Thanks for joining the Hip Homeschool Hop today!

    Blessings,

Thanks, Kysha! My children are all grown up now, so we don’t get to look forward to a new school year. But they still love learning – and we have fun new things to share all the time anyway!
