I think each family has its own unique learning style. I don’t mean visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learning style but a way of learning that the whole family enjoys together.
Whether through genetic similarities, common environment, or both, families can usually find meaningful and enjoyable ways to learn together. Terry’s and my children are 20 and 25 now, but we still enjoy the same learning activities.
For our family, our learning style together came naturally. We all love reading together and traveling together.
Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.

We were homeschoolers in a house with walls lined with bookcases filled with books. We used Montessori principles and discovery learning as well, but some of our best memories are from sitting together on the couch and reading aloud.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
On the road again
Goin’ places that I’ve never been
Seein’ things that I may never see again
And I can’t wait to get on the road again.
– Willie Nelson
As for traveling together, it didn’t matter if we were just taking a local field trip. Near or far, our travels led to many happy and educational experiences. For us, as long as we could reach a place during a one- or two day car trip (totalling 18 hours or less), we were up for a new adventure. Of course, many of our trips included skating competitions or trips to visit grandparents. To this day, we love family road trips!
