Montessori-Inspired Fruit Unit

August 21, 2012 By Deb Chitwood 22 Comments

A week ago, I published a Montessori-inspired vegetable unit. Today, I want to share ideas for a Montessori-inspired fruit unit. Since grocery stores today have fruit year-round, you can have a fruit unit at any time. Still, summer is my favorite time for a fruit unit, especially when there’s access to some homegrown fruits.

Yes, young preschool students love to study food. My students love reading The Hungry Caterpillar book then playing the game to go with the book. Lots of fruit in that book. http://www.brennaphillips.com/hungry-caterpillar-game

Thanks for your comment, Brenna! I always loved The Very Hungry Caterpillar book and activities that went with it. It’s great that it can reinforce the idea of eating fruit along with a number of other skills. Thanks for sharing the link to an activity your students enjoy! 🙂

What a wonderful unit! When my kids were little, I loved exploring new foods with them. I’d take them in the vege/fruit isle and let them pick out new fruits, etc. to try.

Thank you for your sweet comment about my most recent post.

    Take Care,
    Jen

Deb – I made up 3 part Montessori cards for the tropical fruit trees (lemongrass & sugarcane are the non trees)in our yard. They’re fun for anyone who wants to see where a banana comes from.

Great post Deb, as always. We just wrapped up an apple unit, and I intended to expand it to include fruit in general but ran out of time. I’m pinning this for another unit! Thanks for linking up to The Sunday Showcase.

This a a great unit, especially to teach healthy eating and to add to a unit on the food pyramid.
For an activity for technology/computer learners, check out the Fruit Finder app for the Kindle Fire.

    Hi Deb.
I am the owner and director of Sunflower Montessori School in Colorado. One of my primary teachers is desperately wanting the Parts of an Orange material and it seems that the Montessori Helper website is the only place to get this. However, I am not sure if they are no longer in business or if there is just something going on with their purchase form but when I go in to try to purchase a membership in order to download materials it will not let me. It just keeps giving an error message with no explanation. Do you know if they are still in business or somewhere else I could get this material from? Thanks and you have a wonderful website!
