Join the 100 Acts of Kindness Project

When I was doing online research yesterday afternoon, I was excited to find a wonderful project you can do with your students and/or family between Martin Luther King Day and Valentine’s Day. And it definitely isn’t too late to start.

100 Acts of Kindness Project

I found the 100 Acts of Kindness Project through Toddler Approved, although Toddler Approved credited Read Write Think for the idea. It’s an idea that could make a big difference in your students’ and/or children’s lives … and you can make your kindness project as simple or as elaborate as you choose.

If you want to participate in this year’s 100 Acts of Kindness Project through Toddler Approved, comment on the above blog post. Then you’ll need to record your students’ or family’s 100 Acts of Kindness, participate in a weekly kindness challenge through Toddler Approved, and have a kindness celebration on Valentine’s Day.

Here’s this week’s kindness challenge: Kindness Challenge # 1. The kindness-challenge post also shows a great way to record the 100 acts with preschoolers. Here’s another way to track the 100 acts: 100 Hearts. Read Write Think has a link to a printable 100 Acts of Kindness Chart, which you might want to use with older children (although it can be used with any age). Or you can develop your own system for recording your 100 acts.

To connect your 100 Acts of Kindness to Martin Luther Day, I have links to information, a video, and Martin Luther Day activities in the Living Montessori Now Blog Frog Community thread called Do you do an educational activity to celebrate Martin Luther King Day in your home or school?

Please join me!

Even though my husband and I live in Colorado Springs and our kids are adults living in San Diego, we’re used to doing homeschool projects together. We’ll just do a new, adult version of this wonderful project, one that works for our unique family. So I’m participating in the 100 Acts of Kindness Project with my kids and kids-in-love. We’ll use the printable chart from Read Write Think and talk about our acts of kindness over the phone or Skype. Feel free to find the best way to join in for your family!

To show that it really isn’t too late to start (and that you can adapt this project for any age), here’s a very touching and inspiring post from a blogger who involved her husband, three daughters, and husband’s parents (along with people around the world) in doing multiple acts of kindness in one day:  How I Celebrated My Birthday (aka 38 Random Acts of Robyn) from Mix Mingle Glow.

If you decide to join the 100 Acts of Kindness Project, I have a new thread at the Living Montessori Now Blog Frog Community where you can share your ideas, posts, and activities. I’d love to hear about what you’re doing or planning to do (even if you’re saving it for next year)! Are you participating in the 100 Acts of Kindness Project with your students and/or family? (Note: my Blog Frog Community is now embedded as a page on my blog. You can visit any discussion in the Living Montessori Now Community forum easily just by clicking on the Community tab at the top of my blog!)

UPDATE: Random Acts of Kindness Week is February 14-20. Here’s an inspiring video about a 4-year-old Seattle Montessori student’s project during Random Acts of Kindness Week! Video: West Seattle Montessori student’s blanket drive gains fame

If this is your first time visiting Living Montessori Now, welcome! If you haven’t already, please join us on our Living Montessori Now Facebook page where you’ll find a Free Printable of the Day and lots of inspiration and ideas for parenting and teaching!

I love this! It is so helpful to be intentional, to have a season of focus on a single idea or principle. Helps avoid “teflon-brain-syndrome”. (That’s what I call it when something just won’t stick in a little head!)

This looks like a great project. I will have to think about how we can work on it at our house.

Thanks, Misty! I really think the project can be adapted for any age group. The links lower in my post have ideas that work all the way through high school. And my family is having lots of fun doing the 100 Acts of Kindness as adults! We just discussed our acts of kindness over Skype this morning – and I recorded them on the chart I printed out. It’s a great project even for adults! I’ll be telling about some of our activities in the Blog Frog thread as we go along.

This is a wonderful project to do in school. I’m hoping my two get to do this someday in one of their classes or I will keep this in my favorites to maybe do next year leading up to MLK Holiday. I think it links so well with that Holiday. It reminds me of course of some children’s picture books:-) ‘The Kindness Quilt’ by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, ‘Kindness is cooler, Mrs Ruler’ by Margery Cuyler and ‘Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed’ by Emily Pearson.

Thanks for your comment, Michelle – and for the great book ideas! :) We’re following the tradition of 100 Acts of Kindness between Martin Luther King Day and Valentine’s Day, but it would work well before Martin Luther King Day, too! It really does link well with that holiday, doesn’t it?! Thanks again for the book suggestions – I always love hearing your book recommendations!
