I’ve been writing about Thanksgiving activities a lot lately – but I want to focus today on one of the early geography activities that you’ll ideally introduce to your preschooler during the first semester of the school year. I already talked about land, air, and water in relation to a Montessori-inspired transportation unit.
Here are some helpful ideas for introducing land, air, and water from around the blogosphere:

Geography Album Cover Photo
If you sign up for my weekly newsletter in the form in my right sidebar, you’ll receive a free geography album created by Karen Tyler, a certified AMS teacher, who has a wonderful online training program through World Wide Montessori Online! Starting on page 47 of the album, you’ll find thorough directions for introducing land, air, and water.
Montessori MOMents has Land, Air, and Water – Montessori Materials (photo at the top of this post) using Air, Land, and Water Sorting Cards from Montessori Print Shop. Montessori Print Shop also has other inexpensive air, land, and water materials.
Jessie from The Education of Ours has Geography Activity: Land, Air, and Water at Mommy Moment.
Montessori for Everyone has inexpensive Land, Air, and Water Matching Cards and Chinese Land, Air, and Water Cards.
Montessori Mama has an Air, Land, and Water Mat.
Making Montessori Ours has Make a Land Water and Air Mat.
To the Lesson! has Elements of the Earth: Land, Air, and Water and animal pin pushing to be sorted into land, air, and water animals. UPDATE: Even though Montessori schools and homeschools have been using push pins for pin punching for years, I think it’s time to change. Please read this sad post and consider an alternative to push pins, such as Montessori Services’ wood handled puncher (like the one pictured at To the Lesson!)
A Bohemian Education has an activity to introduce Land, Air, and Water.
The Adventures of Bear has a Land, Water, Air lesson.
Montessori at Home (blogspot) has a Land, Water, Air Presentation.
How We Montessori has Land, Air and Water Categorisation.
Carrots Are Orange has Preschool Geography {Land, Air, Water} presentation.
Just Montessori has land, air, and water lessons.
Barefoot in Suburbia has a land, air, and water activity and a land, air, and water birds activity.
Once land, air, and water is introduced, you can keep the concept fresh with extensions such as a transportation focus, an Earth Day focus like To the Lesson’s, or a focus on a particular animal such as birds, like Barefoot in Suburbia’s.
Have fun with land, air, and water!

Thanks, Rach! I love that you can make land, air, and water very simple for young children like your daughter and add extensions and complexity as she gets older.

Helpful as always.
And, not land-air-water, but some easy to make cloud, rain and weather works can be found at my post: http://traininghappyhearts.blogspot.com/2010/04/frugal-fridays-vol-2-sensory-and-skills.html if anyone is interested.
Thanks, Martianne! Your cloud, rain and weather works are awesome – and great examples of extensions that can be used after introducing land, air, and water!

What great ideas. The Land – air – water on a picture with toy, or with the jars and photos are so simple even my son could do them. Thanks for the inspiration.
