Activity of the Week – ABC Letter Box and Astronaut Unit

ABC Letter Box (Photo from Spell Outloud)

Spell Outloud has an ABC letter box that is a combination sensory tub and alphabet box. (Update: The Spell Outloud blog is no longer available. See the Totally Tots link.) It’s a great addition to a unit focusing on a particular letter sound. Note: there are helpful links in Learning to Read Can Be Just a Fun Game on how to introduce letter sounds.

Astronaut Unit Links for Preschoolers

Maureen from Spell Outloud shares letter sound activities at Totally Tots. Recently, she paired her ABC letter box with an “A is for astronaut” theme.

Here some other fun activities for an astronaut unit from around the blogosphere:

On Our Shelves – January from Counting Coconuts has many space-theme activities. A number of those would be appropriate for an astronaut theme. There are also many wonderful photos showing attractive ways to display activities on trays, a helpful Montessori principle.

Homeschool Creations has many free printables in a free Astronaut Preschool Pack.

Jojoebi has a fun idea for a Space Dinner – Tutorial.

A Teaching Mommy has ideas for space pretend play and free printables for Space!

Astronaut Unit Links for Elementary-Aged Children

Here’s an Astronaut Unit Study from Homeschool Helper Online.

Here’s an Independent Study: Astronauts from Walking By the Way.

I love the letter box. We used this all the time when my little guy was younger. We then moved to pudding on a pan for spelling. Thank you for sharing all the links too. Have a blessed day Deb.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting! In “Learning to Read Can Be Just a Fun Game,” I told how my son loved matching letters and objects. Maureen used a similar concept in her “A is for Astronaut” activities. I always found combining letters and objects to be a fun way for preschoolers to learn initial letter sounds.
