Activity of the Week – Montessori-Inspired Decorating the Christmas Tree Activity

Decorating the Christmas Tree Activity (Photo from Nataša at Leptir)

Leptir has a perfect activity for this time of year – Decorating the Christmas Tree. The activity just requires a miniature tree, miniature decorations sorted into bowls or other containers, and a tray. It’s a practical life activity but can also be used to sort the decorations by color or type of decoration. Leptir has Google Translate in the left sidebar, so you can easily translate the language describing the activity from Croatian.

You can have your child decorate the tree and then remove the decorations before returning the tray to the shelf. That would be a typical Montessori activity with the child returning everything to its place at the end. Because children will usually be proud of their finished work, I would probably give each child a choice of returning the decorations to the bowls at the end or leaving the tree decorated. Whether the tree is decorated or not, the tray containing the tree and bowls should be returned to its place on the shelf when your child is finished with the activity.

When your child returns to do the work again, he or she can take the decorations off the tree and re-decorate it. If another child chooses to do the activity later, that child can remove the decorations, sorting them into the correct bowls. Then he or she can take a turn at decorating the tree.

Give your child some Montessori-inspired practical life fun for the holidays!

Thanks for your comment! When I had a Montessori school, this was a very popular activity – and it’s great that it meets young children’s need for repetition when it’s set up as an activity on the shelf.

It’s a great idea, I never thought of it before.
This activity is really good especially for those children who do not celebrate Christmas and have a chance to decorate Christmas tree.

Thanks for your comment, Sharon! That would be an opportunity for children who don’t have a Christmas tree at home. I even know a few Jewish families who’ve adopted some Christmas traditions just because they’re fun!
