Activity of the Week – Gardening and Learning the Parts of a Rhubarb Plant

Today’s activity of the week is from MommyMoment.ca. It includes a number of great activities related to the outdoors and gardening. There are practical life photos from the family’s spring gardening activities. Cultural activities are included when the children in the Montessori home preschool learn the parts of a rhubarb plant.

If you’re teaching terminology such as the parts of  a plant, it’s helpful to use Montessori’s three-period lesson. Here are directions on how to use the three-period lesson from montessoritraining.blogspot.com.

I think we have wild rhubarb growing in our backyard. I just have no idea what to do with it!

Thanks for your comment, Dionna. I know in Mommy Moment, the children had fun making rhubarb crisp. We always had that as a dessert in the spring and summer when I was a child. With young children, I like the idea of teaching the parts of the rhubarb plant. And I have lots of great memories of playing outdoors as a child with rhubarb leaf hats and umbrellas!
