For today’s activity of the week, I chose a practical life activity that was always popular with children when I owned a Montessori preschool. Using an eggbeater will develop the child’s concentration and eye-hand coordination. The activity is especially good for eye-hand coordination because it involves the use of both hands.
Of course, to avoid frustration, it’s important to have an eggbeater that turns easily. Here’s a photo of the basic activity from Montessori Homeschool (monthome.com). MontessoriHomeschool.com has a number of helpful practical life activities pictured on the same page as the one for using an eggbeater.
Using an eggbeater also has an extension that children especially enjoy. That extension is to add soap to the water so the child can use the eggbeater to make soapsuds. As in demonstrating any practical life exercise, be sure to break the activity down into steps. There’s a good explanation of the steps involved at The Joy of Learning.
