Fun STEAM Activities with Little Passports Science Expeditions

It can be difficult to get kids excited about science – especially if you didn’t enjoy science as a child. But I’m excited to share something that makes it easy for you to give your kids a fun way to explore science at home or in the classroom. It’s the brand new Little Passports Science Expeditions subscription, which is out just in time for holiday gift giving!

A Bit about STEAM Activities and Little Passports Science Expeditions

In case you’re not aware of the term STEAM, the term stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. STEAM activities are essential for kids in our world today. I love that Little Passports has  created an interdisciplinary approach to science – one that also fits well with homeschoolers or afterschoolers using unit studies. Each month’s package will contain STEAM activities related to a theme such as  rockets, forensic science, vision, caves and crystals, northern lights and magnetism, and hydrology. Little Passports Science Expeditions is designed for ages 9+, although many of the activities can be used in a homeschool with multiple ages.

The first month’s kit includes a Science Case and Lab Notebook.

Each month’s package will include:

• 16-Page comic book with glossary and bonus activities
• A new mystery with Sam & Sofia
• Hands-on science experiments
• Achievement badges for each monthly theme
• Access to bonus online videos and science content

My Review of Little Passports Science Expeditions

As I said, I love the themed, interdisciplinary approach of the Little Passports Science Expeditions subscription. Sam and Sofia are fun characters that children who’ve had the World edition or USA edition are already familiar with. The characters and monthly comic book make science much more accessible for many kids.

When my now-adult daughter was a pre-teen, she was obsessed with Harriet the Spy. So I showed her the Science Expeditions activities and asked for her opinion. She said she would have loved them.

The activities are very easy to put together. Here are some ideas of trays you could use in a homeschool for multiple ages. The booklet with science experiments is laid out so that it’s easy to see which materials are in the package and which ones you need to get (or will have in your kitchen). I found that I already had all the materials I needed. I just placed all the materials for each experiment on a large tray. The directions for the experiments are very clear and easy to follow.

A Very Berry DNA Extraction is a fun experiment for older kids, although preschoolers wouldn’t understand it. Younger kids could help with some of the hands-on activities in a homeschool situation,though.

Hints from Prints is a science experiment that everyone could get involved in. Both Christina and my almost-3-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, did parts of this activity. Of course, Zoey didn’t really understand the significance of fingerprints or an analysis of fingerprints, but she enjoyed taking her fingerprint and seeing fingerprints magnified.

Christina, Zoey, and I were all interested in seeing how much clearer a fingerprint’s characteristics were when a balloon was inflated to magnify the fingerprint. That was from the second “hints from prints” investigation.

Spatter Studies is another activity multiple ages could get involved in. Seeing the various spatter differences would be interesting for a variety of ages, even though older kids will be able to take the activity to a much deeper level.

Even without any children ages 9 and older, I had a lot of fun reviewing the first month’s package. I’m definitely impressed with the Science Expeditions subscription!
