We’ve loved our life cycle unit, which is perfect for spring! Here are our favorite books for a life cycle theme.

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Read sample” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there.
Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.
For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles). This unit has mainly Montessori-friendly non-fiction books.

Books for a Life Cycle Theme
I’m featuring books here for a life cycle theme mainly for toddlers through elementary-age kids.
Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:
- DK Life Cycles book is a gorgeous, comprehensive book with more than 60 life cycles.
- Life Cycles
- The Amazing Life Cycle of Plants is an appealing book for preschoolers. It does have smiling animals, but it’s Montessori-friendly in many other ways.
2nd Shelf:
- National Geographic Kids Seed to Plant
- A Seed Is Sleepy – The illustrations of a wide variety of seeds in this book are gorgeous, making it a wonderful addition to a study of seeds and plants around the world. (Recommended for ages 5-10.)
- Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones has been around for many years and is a fun introduction to oviparous animals and animal classification written in rhyme.
3rd Shelf:
4th Shelf:
Bottom Shelf:
- Animals Born Alive and Well (a good book from my children’s childhood). Note: It now has a different illustration on the cover.
- Horse Life Cycle (from the Science Vocabulary Readers series)
- The Human Life Cycle book is designed for elementary-age kids, but younger children can enjoy it, too. My 23-month-old granddaughter loves the book. I just read one or two sentences from each page, and we discuss the pictures.
- The Tiny Seed: With seeded paper to grow your own flowers! by Eric Carle
We have a number of other books helpful for life cycles in a book basket, including:
I also kept most of the Science Vocabulary Readers series in another basket for this post. I must have gotten one of the last sets, since this set is no longer available (except in sets of six each – 36 books total). I love the series, but I’m not sure if it’ll be republished with the books sold individually or with 6 different books, like I got.
You can see lots of life cycle books for kids here.
