Activity of the Week – Life Cycle of a Butterfly

May 23, 2011 By Deb Chitwood

Spring is a wonderful time to focus on the life cycle of a butterfly and to do caterpillar and butterfly activities. The photo is from a post Spell Outloud recently published with butterfly life cycle materials and related activities.

The post from Spell Outloud used the Montessori Print Shop toddler butterfly life cycle cards and book, but Montessori Print Shop has lovely butterfly materials that are appropriate for preschoolers through early elementary as well. Montessori Print Shop also has clear instructions for preparing 3-part cards.

Parts of a Butterfly Cards for Ages 6-9

Montessori Helper has free butterfly nomenclature cards for ages 6-9. You can download one free material each 30 days from Montessori Helper by registering at the site.

    Deb,

Thanks for sharing such great resources! This is a fabulous unit!! It still amazes me how they can change from a caterpillar into a butterfly! We loved ordering caterpillars from insectlore.com along with the butterfly net/cage (cage?).

    Thanks for all you share!

Thanks for your kind comment, Sarah! It’s great that you had fun with it! It seems almost miraculous that you can actually raise butterflies at home! 🙂

Selena has been all about the metamorphosis of the caterpillar turning into a butterfly for over a year now. I wanted to get the caterpillars and let her raise her own, but am glad we didn’t this year, it’s been too cold, I wouldn’t want to set her up to a failed attempt. We have yet to see even one butterfly here.

Thanks for your comment, Debbie! It has been a cold spring in a lot of places, hasn’t it?! That’s a good point about making sure the weather is right! 🙂

Hmmm… I’ve tried to explain to my 3 year old how butterflies come from caterpillars but she was not convinced 🙂 Maybe I’ll try to find some info online how to grow our own 🙂

Thanks for your comment, Michelle! Raising your own butterflies would definitely be the best way to explain how butterflies come from caterpillars! What a great activity to do together! 🙂

Beautiful! We bought a butterfly garden once where you get coccoons in the mail… OMG, fun stuff!

Thanks, Sheila! What a fun project! It would be great if every child had a chance to raise butterflies at least once!

This is my favorite time of year, all because of the butterflies!

Thanks, Jessie – I agree! I still have so many wonderful memories of chasing butterflies as a child and love the idea of studying them at school or home!

Nice. And here is an art project to go along with the life cycle of a butterfly: http://www.brennaphillips.com/from-caterpillar-to-butterfly

Thanks so much, Brenna! I like that the art project is so simple to make but reinforces the information children learn when they study the butterfly life cycle! 🙂
