Activity of the Week – Montessori-Inspired Pumpkin Activities

Pumpkin Hammering (Photo from My Montessori Journey)

Now is the perfect time to focus on pumpkin activities, whether it’s to celebrate harvest-time or Halloween. Montessori sites are good places to look for some educational and fun pumpkin activities.

The activity in the photo is a pumpkin hammering activity from My Montessori Journey. It’s a great first introduction to using a hammer for young children – and it’s fun! (Note: My Montessori Journey also had a similar log hammering activity.) The My Montessori Journey blog is no longer available.

To focus on pumpkins and science, My Montessori Journey has a pumpkin life-cycle activity.

Montessori for Everyone has a beautiful, free life-cycle-of-a-pumpkin download.

Our Montessori Story has a photo using the life-cycle-of-a-pumpkin cards. Check out the other wonderful Montessori activities as well!

Counting Coconuts has some fabulous Montessori-inspired pumpkin activities. 10/10/21 update: Here’s the latest post from Counting Coconuts with lots of awesome pumpkin and Halloween activities!

The Work Plan uses an attractive pumpkin holder for 3-part cards on the parts of a pumpkin. Check out the post for some other great Montessori-inspired Halloween activities. I haven’t found a free source for 3-part cards on the parts of the pumpkin, but Montessori Print Shop has the 3-part cards (“Pumpkin Nomenclature Cards”) along with a number of other inexpensive pumpkin materials.

UPDATE: There are many, many more pumpkin activities in my “Montessori-Inspired Pumpkin Unit.”

Have fun with pumpkins!

I just love incorporating holiday themes into our school time. Thanks very much for linking back to me, Deb. I took a look at that post and smiled to see my little guy looking so much younger – how quickly a year goes by!

I’ll be posting about our new pumpkin/Halloween works later this week.

Thanks, Mari-Ann! You do such a great job of incorporating holiday and seasonal themes! I love linking back to your posts. I’ll update this post with a link to your new pumpkin activities once they’re published – I can’t wait to see them!! It’ll be fun to see your son with both the new and old pumpkin activities!

My son would love pumpkin hammering. I’m pretty sure my daughter would too actually. We’ll have to give this a try when we’re ready to part with some of our non-carving pumpkins.

Thanks, Michelle! I know that activity would have been very popular both when I had a Montessori school and when I homeschooled my children. Hammering activities are always popular – and great for eye-hand coordination – but this one is extra fun!
