Celebrating Epiphany with Your Child

January 6, 2011 By Deb Chitwood

January 6 is Epiphany, or, Three Kings Day! Before, I wrote about our family’s simple Epiphany celebration each year. Today, I want to give you some links to activities you can use to celebrate the day as simply or elaborately as you’d like.

Celebrating Epiphany with Your Child

You can always choose to save some activities for next year. During a holiday season, I often find too many ideas to use right away. So I’ll just bookmark ideas for another year.

Disclosure: This post contains Amazon affiliate links (at no cost to you).

The Complete Guide to Godly Play: Volume 3, Revised and Expanded by Jerome W. Berryman gives a bit of background on Epiphany. Berryman says:

Epiphany is a Greek word that means ‘showing forth.’ The date of its celebration is January 6th. It was originally concerned with the commemoration of the Baptism of Christ and later became associated with the Magi, an emphasis of the Latin Church of the West. Today it is often thought of as the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles.

Ideas for Celebrating Epiphany

If you use Godly Play activities, The Complete Guide to Godly Play: Volume 3, Revised and Expanded has an Epiphany lesson focusing on the wise men’s gifts. If you have the Godly Play Advent cards and Christmas card, the Epiphany lesson would be a perfect way to help your child discover the meaning of Epiphany.

  • Wondering through the Year has a Three Kings Day Party and other wonderful activities for Celebrating Epiphany.
  • Explore and Express has some special Godly Play Epiphany activities.
  • Tired, Need Sleep has a post with a lovely activity: Preschool Art – Epiphany Stars and Corn Syrup Painting.
  • Red Ted Art’s Blog has lots of fun Epiphany activities: Three Kings Day Crafts
  • My Little House has a wise men paper craft: Paper Toys  – The Wise  Men
  • eHow has articles on How to Celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany and Children’s Arts & Crafts for Epiphany.

Godly Play Books

Whatever you choose to do, have a Happy Epiphany!

Thanks so much, Maggy! It does seem to be a neglected holiday. I love your dress-up post and that you celebrate Epiphany, too! 🙂

Thanks for your comment, Lori! I was excited to find so many great Epiphany resources – now I’ll just need to wait for grandkids to incorporate some new Epiphany traditions!

I am so honored to have my post included in this list – thank you! I have to say, I’ve never heard of the Godly Play series, but it sounds like EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for. I’m familiar with Maria Montessori’s ideas about teaching religion, and have been trying to find more information about how to homeschool from the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, but it’s hard to find enough information. This sounds like it has taken that to the next level and I’m definitely going to look into these books! 🙂 Thanks again!

You’re welcome, Nicole – and thanks for your wonderful Epiphany ideas! I love both Godly Play and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. I think Godly Play is probably easier to use in a homeschool, though. Here’s a link to the posts I’ve published about Montessori-based religious education: https://livingmontessorinow.com/category/montessori-based-religious-education/. Here’s also a link to a discussion about Godly Play and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in the Living Montessori Now Blog Frog Community: http://theblogfrog.com/1378313/forum/45386/montessori-based-religious-education.html

We love Catholic Mom. We like to have a kid friendly Nativity. No glass 🙂
