Favorite Books for a Post Office Theme

February 11, 2025 By Deb Chitwood Leave a Comment

Here are some of our favorite books for a post office theme! This is a great theme as part of a community helpers unit or as a theme before Christmas or Valentine’s Day. The books here aren’t holiday books, so they can be used for any post office unit.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links (at no cost to you).

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Read Sample” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there.

Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.

For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles).

I’m featuring books here for an winter theme for preschoolers through elementary-age kids.

Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:

  • The Post Office Book: Mail and How It Moves is a Montessori-friendly book by Gail Gibbons, an author whose books I often use in our unit studies. The book has lots of easy-to-understand information about post offices and the postal system.

  • Mail Carriers

2nd Shelf:

  • My First Trip to the Post Office is a Montessori-friendly book with one or two sentences per two-page spread. It’s great for toddlers and young preschoolers as a read-aloud or for children a bit older as a beginning reader.
  • Our Post Office
  • A Trip to the Post Office with Sesame Street

3rd Shelf:

  • Mail Carriers is a Montessori-friendly book that has few sentences per page and is an easy read-aloud for toddlers and young preschoolers. It’s a beginning reader for older children.
  • It Came in the Mail
