Book Review – Trevor Eissler’s 4,962,571 Children’s Book

November 1, 2011 By Deb Chitwood

June Books launched 4,962,571 on November 1!

If you’re starting to think about Christmas, I know of a children’s book that would make a wonderful Christmas present! I love Trevor Eissler’s writing and Montessori Madness message for adults. How great that he’s written a book to inspire children as well!

About 4,962,571

Here’s the book description at June Books:

4,962,571 by Trevor Eissler“4,962,571 is the story of a boy suddenly captivated by the idea of counting to a very large number. He sets a goal for himself, and through self-discipline, creativity, insight, and hard work, he…well, you will have to see whether he reaches it or not.”

Advance Praise for 4,962,571:

“This book delightfully captures the Montessori goal of children not only coming up with questions on their own, but also figuring out how to answer them. Zach’s curiosity and inventiveness, as well as his joy in his self-directed learning, are true hallmarks of Montessori education…” -Marcy Krever, American Montessori Society

“An out loud reading of 4,962,571 should excite your child’s mathematical imagination…Ruth Chung’s illustrations delight the senses… 4,962,571 may be one of those books that you read with your children 4,962,571 times!” -Maren Schmidt, author of Understanding Montessori.

“Trevor Eissler has hit another home run! I wish that all parents could understand the natural desire to improve oneself and the role of self-motivation that is exhibited in this story.” -Mark Berger, Executive Director, Montessori School of Lake Forest

Shelley, a certified Montessori teacher from At Home Montessori blog, had the opportunity to read the pre-launched 4,962,571. This is what she wrote about it: What a Blessing!

Here are a few of Shelley’s words:

“Simply put, Mr. Eissler has written a childrens book that shows a young man who is not looking for praise or reward, but instead his goal is to reach a number! As a Montessorian I know that this was through the act of asking questions, movement (touch and experience!) and he just wanted to do what my students call, ‘hard work!’”

Now for the Giveaway: This giveaway is now closed.

MontessoriBuddyA bit about MontessoriBuddy (Update: now Montessori Compass), who’s sponsoring the giveaway:

“MontessoriBuddy (now Montessori Compass) was designed to help bridge the gap between home and school. MB’s goal is to simplify the day-to-day administrative chores for Montessori educators while providing a convenient way for busy parents to remain actively engaged with the school community. The end result is a more personalized connection with the classroom for all stakeholders in a child’s education. Remember, there’s no software to install and no long-term contracts. Montessori record keeping has never been easier! Request an online demo and sign up for your free trial today!”

As a teacher-librarian (in a non Montessori environment), I am always interested in new children’s books that inspire and promote creativity and thinking both for my work and for my two sons (who will be/are in a Montessori environment). Would love to win.

I love a book that encourages a child to follow through with their curiosity and keep trying to find an answer. Many children I encounter want an answer provided for them when they ask a question, I like helping them answer their own questions through exploration.

wow this looks like a fantastic book, there are not vary many things out there encouraging children to ‘seek [the answer] for themselves’ … i would love this book to read to my 3 children, my eldest (6) is always counting things, and he has actually asked me what the largest number is.. i answered that i thought it was something like a googlepex…
