Vegetarian Thanksgiving Recipes and Family Cookbook

November 23, 2010 By Deb Chitwood

In my Homeschool Thanksgiving  post last Thursday, I promised to share my Thanksgiving nut loaf and cranberry salad recipes today. I’ll give you the downloads for the digital scrapbooking pages I created for our family recipe book.

Nut Loaf and Cranberry Salad Recipes

The nut loaf recipe was adapted from the 1973 edition of The Deaf Smith Country Cookbook. That was the first cookbook I used after I became a vegetarian at age 18. I still have the cookbook. The recipe can be adapted for vegans by using egg substitute, available from health food stores. Either butter or vegan spread can be added to the top of each serving.

I created 8½x11” digital scrapbooking pages for both recipes. Here are the digital scrapbooking freebies:

To download the nut loaf recipe, click here, then right click on the image and choose “Save Picture As . . .”

How to Create Your Own Family Cookbook

Both my son, Will, and his wife, Chea, and my daughter, Christina, and her husband, Tom, have family cookbooks I created through digital scrapbooking. I also made a copy for myself.

To create a family cookbook, photos can be used for the page backgrounds, or you can purchase downloadable recipe backgrounds and elements. For ideas on how to get started with digital scrapbooking, see my post called Help Your Child Create Unforgettable Cards and Gifts through Digital Scrapbooking.

Here’s how I made the recipe books. I:

  • made pages for each of my favorite family recipes
  • printed the pages
  • put the pages in sheet protectors
  • added dividers for each recipe category
  • placed the pages in a 3-ring binder with a cover that allowed a page insertion
  • created a page for the cover

You could purchase a scrapbook, but I like the 3-ring binder for the ease of adding pages as I discover new recipes.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

What a great idea to create a family recipe book, My mum who is nearly 90 has always been a wonderful cook and I must get together with her and create a family recipe book as she always cooks the tastiest food and time is moving on. I’ll show her your blog for inspiration and maybe she will share some recipes.See my brief blog about my dear mum ‘Family Scrapbooking Design Layout ideas’

When I am back to my printer, these are the first on the docket! Love the sound of these recipes. I have begun to create recipe binders with the boys, as we do a great deal of learning in the kitchen. I believe now we will take them to a whole new level with the digital scrapbooking! Such a lovely keepsake with fond memories on every page. Thank you, Deb! Blessings to you and yours.

I’m not a vegetarian, but these recipes look very tasty! Thank you for taking the time to share them!

We are birds of a feather, Deb. 🙂 I collect and print so many loose leaf recipes that I too keep them in a ring binder using sheet protectors and tabs! It’s such a great way to keep them all organized.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

    Warmly,
    Mari-Ann

Your Nut Loaf recipe looks so delicious. I’m going to try it this Thanksgivning. I’ll let you know how it turned out. Thanks for sharing. And what a great idea to create a family favorite’s recipe book. I am always looking for new recipes using tofu. My daughter and I are trying to perfect our sesame tofu, but we still can’t get it just right. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thanks, Lori! Please do tell me how your nut loaf turns out! And let me know if you get your sesame tofu perfected! I’m one of those people who actually likes tofu!

I love this idea. I keep thinking that I’m going to make a cookbook for our family, with all of our favorite recipes, but it gets overwhelming as we have so many! I like the binder idea so that you can add more as you find them.

Thanks, Laura! I love to discover great, new recipes, and I love feeling the freedom to easily add new recipes to my 3-ring binder recipe book!
