Montessori Monday – Phonics: How to Introduce Words Starting with Phonograms

July 13, 2015 By Deb Chitwood

My daughter, granddaughter, and I have had fun recently creating videos that show how you can introduce the beginning sounds of words and objects to toddlers and preschoolers. Today, I’m sharing our latest video about how to introduce words that start with phonograms. This post focuses especially on helping your child hear the sound of the phonogram.

Montessori Phonics: How to Introduce Words Starting with Phonograms

When your child is learning to read, there will be a concentrated focus on identifying phonograms, both visually and by sound. But this post shows one way you can introduce words that could be confusing if you don’t introduce the phonogram sound. (Note: I’m not advocating trying to force toddlers to read. Follow your child’s interest, as always. This activity is simply meant to be one of the fun activities that begin to help young children hear the sounds at the beginning of words.)

Hearing Phonogram Sounds – Video

In this video, my daughter, Christina, shows how we introduce the beginning sound for “church,” which is one of the miniature objects my 20-month-old granddaughter, Zoey (Christina’s niece), wants to have in her object basket. Of course, with toddlers and young preschoolers, it’s ideal to have only objects that start with one-letter phonetic sounds. But that won’t always happen. What if your child has a special interest in sharks? We made this video to show how you can deal with objects like those.
