Activity of the Week – Montessori-Inspired Trays for Care of Self

July 11, 2011 By Deb Chitwood

In Montessori education, care of self is an important part of practical life activities. Summer is often a good time to place extra emphasis on care of self, especially if your preschooler’s independence is extra important in the autumn (for example, when there’ll be a new baby in the family or a new school situation).

Jada Roo Can Do had a fun tray for tooth brushing. Jada Roo Can Do is no longer available.

You can read more about practical life activities and presentations for care of self (which can be adapted for whatever activity you’re introducing) from Montessori Primary Guide.

    Hi Deb!
I am only just about to start homeschooling my two little ones and have been struggling with a theme to make it easy for me to get started. I had only just decided today that it would be “Taking care of Me” to include self care, healthy eating etc and clicked just know on your site to search on ideas!
Had a little laugh when your activity of the week for care of self so thankyou!

This is a good way for children to understand how many teeth they have and just how far back they need to reach in order to brush their own teeth properly. Very cute – thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Jennifer! I love all the concepts that can be learned from that activity, too – and I love the cuteness of those teeth Jada Roo Can Do used for the tray! 🙂
