Favorite Books for a Snake Theme

July 6, 2022 By Deb Chitwood Leave a Comment

All my grandkids have loved our snake theme … and I have, too! Here are some of my favorite books for a snake theme. Most are nonfiction and some are just fun!

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Look Inside the Book” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there. If you live outside the U.S., be sure to check out Book Depository for great prices and free worldwide delivery.

Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.

I usually have a majority of Montessori-friendly books for a theme, but I include a variety of books that might not be Montessori-style books but that are simply lots of fun or are classic books that I consider an important part of cultural literacy. For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly.

I’m featuring books here that are about animals in general, reptiles in general, snakes, and and a few fictitious snakes.

Forward-Facing Book Display (similar style)

Snake Books (or General Reference Books with Good Information About Snakes) We’re Using:

Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:

  • First Animal Encyclopedia: A First Reference Guide to the Animals of the World (I always like to have books available that help children see where the animal we’re studying fits into the animal kingdom.)
  • The Animal Book: A Visual Encyclopedia of Life on Earth
  • National Geographic Kids First Big Book of Reptiles and Amphibians

2nd Shelf:

  • Ultimate Reptileopedia
  • Really Cool Reptiles (This series (I have the whole set) is great for young readers and preschoolers who are learning about animal classifications!)
  • National Geographic Kids: Slither Snake! (The National Geographic Kids pre-readers and readers are fabulous with gorgeous photos and easy-to-understand information!)
  • National Geographic Kids: Snakes

3rd Shelf:

  • Everything You Need to Know About Snakes and Other Scaly Reptiles
  • Snakes by Gail Gibbons (We often have a book by Gail Gibbons in our units. They have lots of easy-to-understand information.)
  • Snakes Are Hunters

4th Shelf:

  • Snakes Smell with Their Tongues!: And Other Amazing Facts
  • Buzzing Rattlesnakes
  • I (Don’t) Like Snakes (A fun fiction story with lots of great information about snakes!)
  • The Greedy Python

Bottom Shelf

  • Can I Play Too?  (I tell more about this fun book here.)
  • Hide and Snake
  • Snakes on the Job (a silly book that’s especially fun for construction lovers)

We also love Picturepedia for most units, including our snake unit. It has an amazing two-page spread with photos of many types of snakes.

You can also see lots of snake books as they’re published here.
