A horse theme is especially fun for Year of the Horse, but it’s great for any year! Here are our favorite books for a horse theme.

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Read sample” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there.
Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.
For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles). This unit features lots of Montessori-friendly books.

Books for a Horse Theme
I’m featuring books here for a horse theme mainly for preschool through elementary-age kids. Many of the books on our forward-facing shelf are Montessori-friendly, nonfiction books.
Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:
- The Big Book of Belonging is part of the lovely Big Book series.
- First Animal Encyclopedia
- The Animal Book: A Visual Encyclopedia of Life on Earth
2nd Shelf:
- Let’s Classify Animals!
- National Geographic Animal Encyclopedia (You’ll notice that I love National Geographic books with their gorgeous photos!)
- National Geographic Kids Ultimate Mammalpedia
3rd Shelf:
- has gorgeous photographs and lots and lots of easy-to-understand information about horses and ponies.
4th Shelf:
- The Book of Horses is filled with easy-to-understand information and beautiful photographs of horses.
- Hello, Horse
Bottom Shelf:
- Two classic and endearing Montessori-friendly books, Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm and The Year at Maple Hill Farm, were originally published in 1974 and 1978. I used them in my Montessori school in the 1980s and with my now-adult kids!
Some other animal books we’re using in another basket:
- Tree of Life: The Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth
- A Mammal Is an Animal
- DK Smithsonian Picturepedia, which I love for most units, including our horse unit. It has gorgeous photos and illustrations with amazing two-page spreads on a wide variety of topics.
- D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths is a classic book of myths. I have the earlier edition from when my kids were homeschooled. Now there’s an updated edition with a new cover and additional drawings and information. We’re focusing on Pegasus in our horse unit.
