Favorite Books for a Germ Theme

February 14, 2023 By Deb Chitwood 2 Comments

We’ve all loved our germ unit, and germ-themed books have been very helpful in teaching about the importance of good hygiene. My grandkids have been drawn to the germ books and love reading them and having them read aloud. Perfect!

Favorite Books for a Germ Theme

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links (at no cost to you).

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Look Inside the Book” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there.

Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.

For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles).

Books for a Germ Theme

I’m featuring books here about germs mainly for preschool through elementary-age kids.

Here’s a short, fun Instagram reel:

  • Germs: Fact and Fiction, Friends and Foes
  • Germs Up Close
  • The Giant Germ chapter book (a Magic School Bus book)

3rd Shelf:

  • A Germ’s Journey (Follow It!)
  • Germs Make Me Sick!
  • Unicorns and Germs (Zoey and Sassafras, 6)

4rd Shelf:

  • Sick Simon (I often find my grandkids reading this book.)
  • Curious George Discovers Germs (One of my grandson’s favorites!)
  • Wash Your Hands, Mr Panda

Bottom Shelf

  • The Magic School Bus Fights Germs
  • Germs Are Not for Sharing (There’s also a Germs Are Not for Sharing board book  for toddlers.)
  • What Are Germs? (Very First Lift-the-Flap Questions & Answers)
  • A Germ’s Journey: Dirty Hands! Clean Hands!

Some other books we’re using:

  • I love DK’s First Human Body Encyclopedia for its beautiful images and easy-too-understand information.
  • Ultimate Bodypedia

On the other side of the room, is a shelf with these books on the top:

These are great ideas to implement with young children. It is always hard to come up with and create hands-on Montessori lessons for children so thank you so much for designing these and sharing them for others to use!
