Montessori-Inspired Mother’s Day

May 3, 2011 By Deb Chitwood 27 Comments

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time for children to use skills they’ve learned to create special gifts for their mothers. For children who are homeschooled, dads can help – or moms can provide materials on activity trays on low shelves for children to create their own special cards and gifts.

Here are some posts with Montessori-inspired ideas that work well for Mother’s Day gifts:

I also want to give some ideas for a Mother’s Day tea. Many Montessori schools have a special Mother’s Day tea, which is both a way to honor mothers and a way to reinforce exercises of grace and courtesy. Even though the concept works especially well in a school, it could also be a special surprise with help from the dad or another relative. And there’s no reason a mom can’t help plan a Mother’s Day tea. While it won’t be a surprise, it will still be a special gift of love from your child.

Montessori-Inspired Father’s Day (idea for card-making tray and some other posts that could be appropriate for Mother’s Day as well)

Flowers and Plants

Mother’s Day Plants from My Montessori Journey (one of my favorite Mother’s Day activities when I had a Montessori school)

Mother’s Day Walk to Study the Wildflowers from Montessori Mom

Demonstrate flower arranging and provide the flowers, enabling your child to create a Mother’s Day arrangement. As guidelines, you could use posts about arranging flowers from The Education of Ours, Info Montessori, Montessori Mama, and Simply Montessori.

Breakfast in Bed or Cooking for Mom

Teach your child how to cook simple foods, and you might experience breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day! Preschoolers and older children can be taught to prepare recipes, such as in my post with 30+ Breakfasts Kids Can Make for Mothers and Fathers.

Gifts to Create at School or Home

A Perfect Mother’s Day Clay Project is a fun project from Inspired Montessori.

Handmade scented soap from My Montessori Journey and To the Lesson! Mother’s Day cards to go with the soap from To the Lesson!

Montessori Curriculum Ideas for Mother’s Day, Celebrating Mother’s Day in the Montessori Classroom, and Mother’s Day in the Montessori Classroom have lots of ideas for creating a special Mother’s Day from North American Montessori Center.

Thanks, Lori! When my kids were little, it was so much fun to see their Mother’s Day gifts for me even though I knew what they were making. As they grew older, the gifts were more of a surprise – but always special! Have a very happy Mother’s Day! 🙂

Some wondeful ideas for mother’s day there! I’ve managed to persuade my girls to not buy me anthing this year – the school runs a stall each year, and kids are taken class by class to buy a gift which does put a lot of pressure on them to buy something – even if they can’t see anything their mum may want! This year I’ve asked my girls to draw me a really special picture and help Daddy to make me dinner on the day! I can’t wait!!
