DIY Montessori Globes

Montessori globes very clearly show land and water and then continents and oceans. It’s possible to make DIY Montessori globes, although you might decide to skip the sandpaper (land and water) globe for a homeschool and many schools.

Most children can easily pick up the concept of land and water using the continents globe, and this is an area where you can save money and/or time. Of course, if you would like to make a DIY sandpaper globe, that’s wonderful. There are some great examples below that you can try if you’d enjoy the process.

You can often find a globe very inexpensively (especially one with outdated political boundaries) to use as the foundation for a DIY Montessori globe. Once your child is familiar with the continents globe, you can use a traditional globe with political boundaries to point out different countries.

During an international event such as the Olympics, it’s helpful to keep a globe nearby when you’re watching television to point out the country mentioned. For more Montessori-inspired geography ideas during the Olympics, see my Opening Ceremony post: Montessori-Inspired Olympic Opening Ceremony Activities and Olympics Blog Hop.
