Axolotls are so much fun to read about … and so much fun in general! Here are our favorite books for an axolotl theme!

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Read sample” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there.
Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.
For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles).
Books for an Axolotl Theme
I’m featuring books here for an axolotl theme mainly for preschool through elementary-age kids.
If you’re looking for an axolotl book for babies and toddlers, this is our favorite (although it isn’t a Montessori-style book): Baby Axolotl Finger Puppet Book (my 13-month-old granddaughter loves it!)

Books for an Axolotl Theme
Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:
- Amphibian Pages from DK’s First Animal Encyclopedia
- National Geographic Animal Encyclopedia
- National Geographic Kids First Big Book of Reptiles and Amphibians (from the Little Kids First Big Book Series by National Geographic Kids.
I use books from this series often.)
2nd Shelf:
3rd Shelf:
- Axolotl Facts for Curious Kids: Learn and Explore Everything You Need to Know About Axolotls Living in the Wild is recommended for ages 6-12, although true axolotl fans of all ages will enjoy much of it. It has lots of facts and even information on virtual axolotl adoptions through MOTE Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. I placed virtual axolotl adoptions for my grandkids. They get an adoption certificate and fact card. There are different levels of adoptions/donations, and it’s a fun way for kids to help conserve these critically endangered animals. Note: There are also virtual adoptions through the World Wildlife Fund and a campaign in Mexico (the only place where axolotls remain in the wild).
- Axolotl Fun Facts and Care Guide for Kids
4th Shelf:
- P Is for Pangolin: an alphabet of obscure, endangered & underappreciated animals
- Hello, I’m an Axolotl
- Alex, the Awesome Axolotl: Mental Health Strengthening for Young Children (Positive Affirmations)
Bottom Shelf
- Emotions Aquarium: A Tank Full of Feelings
- Emotions Aquarium: Anxious Axolotl
- No One Really Knows an Axolotl (a silly, fun wordplay book)
On our peace/mindfulness table is The Glowing Axolotl about self-love and acceptance.
We’re also using:
- Tree of Life: The Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth
- DK Smithsonian Animal Book
- “Awesome amphibians” pages from My Encyclopedia of Very Important Things
