It was so much fun reading about pets! There are so many great pet books for kids! Here are our favorite books for a pet theme.

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Read sample” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there.
Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.
For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles). We have more books that aren’t Montessori-style books in our pet theme, but they’re so much fun!
Books for a Pet Theme

Books for a Pet Theme
I’m featuring books here for a pet theme mainly for toddlers through elementary-age kids.
Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:
- The National Geographic Kids Little Kids First Big Book of Pets is wonderful … like all their books! It’s perfect for preschoolers through first graders.
- Especially good for elementary-age kids, you’ll find lots and lots of photos and easy-to-understand information in the National Geographic Kids Everything Pets book.
- National Geographic Kids Animal Doctors has great photos and easy-to-understand information that is perfect for preschoolers and beginning readers.
2nd Shelf:
- A Day in the Life of a Veterinarian
- I Want to Be a Veterinarian
- May I Pet Your Dog? (I love this book! It has very helpful ideas on exactly what children should say and do when they meet a dog they don’t know. We have many dog owners in our neighborhood, and this is awesome information for children who meet them and their dogs during walks.)
3rd Shelf:
- Cats vs. Dogs
- Strictly No Elephants (a sweet book about inclusion and helping others)
- The Pigeon Wants a Puppy
4th Shelf:
Bottom Shelf:
- The Berenstain Bears’ Pet Rescue
- Biscuit Visits the Doctor (The Biscuit books are great for toddlers and young preschoolers.)
- Tails Are Not for Pulling (a board book that’s perfect for toddlers!)
More books are in a book basket, including:
- Books from Favorite Books for an Amphibian Theme
- Books from Favorite Books for a Reptile Theme
- Books from Favorite Books for a Snake Theme
- Books from Favorite Books for a Fish Theme
- Book from Favorite Books for a Bird Theme
- Books from Favorite Books for a Mammal Theme
- Books from Favorite Books for a Horse Theme
- Watch Me Grow: Rabbit
- See How They Grow: Kitten
- Watch Me Grow: Puppy

Shelf with Pet Fun Fiction Books
On the other side of the room, I have a shelf with some pet fun fiction (many of them classics):
- A Fish Out of Water (My 2-year-old granddaughter often requests this book!)
- Pete the Cat: A Pet for Pete
- The Digging-est Dog
- Harry the Dirty Dog
- Harry and the Guinea Pig (not written by Gene Zion but is a fun story about pets that’s in the style of Gene Zion)

Puppy in My Head Book about Mindfulness with Moonbird Breathing Tool
On the top of our mindfulness table, I have the book Puppy in my Head: A Book about Mindfulness (a fun book about the difficulty being mindful along with tools to help kids manage their feelings) and Moonbird breathing tool, which is a gentle way for kids to focus on breathing exercises. Actually, we like to call our Moonbuddy “Moonbird” (the name of the company) rather than Bibi the Bird. Its description says it’s a “tactile breathing coach for kids – screen-free sleep support and relaxation tool.” It’s a sweet mindfulness tool.
