I love pumpkins and pumpkin patches in the fall! Here are some of our favorite books from our fall pumpkin unit.

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Read Sample” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there.
Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.
For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles). This theme has lots of Montessori-friendly books!
Books for a Pumpkin Theme
I’m featuring books here for a pumpkin theme for toddlers through elementary-age kids. This theme has lots of fun, Montessori-friendly books!

Books for a Pumpkin Theme
Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:
- Pumpkin Circle: The Story of a Garden
- I often use Gail Gibbons books in our unit studies because they have so much great information in an easy-to-understand format. The Pumpkin Book has both scientific information and historical information about pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns.
- Pumpkins!
2nd Shelf:
- Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin Pie is a lovely National Geographic Kids book.
- How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?
- How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow?
3rd Shelf:
- Pumpkin Pumpkin
- County Fair (Little House Picture Book)
- Apples and Pumpkins (my 17-month-old granddaughter’s favorite pumpkin book!)
4th Shelf:
Bottom Shelf
- Too Many Pumpkins
- The Berenstain Bears and the Prize Pumpkin
- Biscuit Visits the Pumpkin Patch (my 17-month-old granddaughter’s other favorite pumpkin book)
Some other books we’re using that are in a book basket:
- Squash and Pumpkin pages from the DK Smithsonian Trees, Leaves, Flowers & Seeds: A Visual Encyclopedia of the Plant Kingdom. The DK Smithsonian books typically have gorgeous photos and are wonderful reference books that I use for many units.
- I love Gail Gibbons books for lots of facts that are easy to understand. For this unit, we’re using The Vegetables We Eat (with pumpkins described as a fruit vegetable).
- Where Does Broccoli Come From? A Book of Vegetables. The books are recommended for kindergarten through grade 6. They’re packed with information and illustrations, but I don’t think they would be appealing for children younger than kindergarten age.
- Food Anatomy: The Curious Parts & Pieces of Our Edible World by Julia Rothman has gorgeous illustrations and lots of information that appeals to any age. I have the Julia Rothman boxed collection that includes Farm Anatomy, Nature Anatomy, and Food Anatomy. I use the books for many units.
- Peter Rabbit and the Pumpkin Patch
