Road construction is a fun, high-interest theme … especially for vehicle lovers. We’ve had construction units before, but this one focuses specifically on road construction!
Here, you’ll find links to free road construction printables used to prepare hands-on activities and a new Montessori-inspired road construction pack for our newsletter subscribers’ resource library!

Montessori Shelves with Road Construction Themed Activities
You’ll find Montessori-inspired road construction themed numbers, letters, and and more (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber) Note: The Montessori-inspired road construction pack isn’t designed as a complete road construction unit but as supplemental materials. I design the packs using realistic images that I’ve often looked for when preparing a unit study (such as font cards and phonogram cards featuring the letter and phonogram related to the theme and math cards with realistic images that fit the theme and can be adapted for math activities at a variety of levels.)
You could mix your road construction themed activities among your shelves according to curriculum area. Or you could have a special road construction themed area something like the one pictured. My shelves at the beginning of our unit have a mixture of skill levels. Many of the activities can be adapted for a variety of levels. Many of these are designed for early elementary as well as preschoolers. If you’re a homeschooler, just choose the activities that work for your child’s interests and ability levels. If you don’t have room for all the activities you’d like to do, simply rotate them.
Notice the framed art print Construction of a Large Road (1774) by Claude-Joseph Vernet. (Louvre museum, Paris, France). It’s a free download from Wikimedia Commons. My 5-year-old grandson is fascinated by this painting. He’s often looked at it and talked about how hard it was to make roads in 1774.
For our monthly featured art print, I purchased a Li’l DAVINCI art frame that opens in the front for easily changing a free art masterpiece printable or vintage illustration to fit with the month’s theme. The frame can be switched from horizontal to vertical without changing the hanger, which is perfect!
If you’re wondering about the rugs and rug box I use, both the rugs and wooden rug holder are from Montessori Services. I love the Montessori Services rugs and rug holder! I used to use an umbrella stand something like these. I loved that for 1-3 rugs, but I needed something different when I had more grandchildren and some projects that needed more than one rug.
Favorite Shelves, Trays, Baskets, and More for Montessori Homeschoolers
I often get asked about the trays, baskets, etc., that I use, so I published a post with many of the items. You can find lots of helpful resources here. They’re not all essential, so don’t feel you need to have everything. Just choose what’s best for your budget and your unique family’s needs. You’ll find more ideas in the Living Montessori Now Amazon shop
Road Construction Themed Books for Kids
Even though I have books on shelves, I’m now keeping many of my themed books in a forward-facing display after placing a plant where the themed book basket was before. Most of my seasonal books are now in that book basket.
For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles). (Note: Our forward-facing bookcase has mainly Montessori-friendly, nonfiction books at the moment. I have some fiction books on another shelf and book basket.)
Top Shelf of Main Themed Shelf:
- Building Roads has lots of easy-to-understand information
- Building Bridges has many fun STEM ideas for bridge building along with information about many types of bridges.
- At the Construction Site pages from National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Things That Go (the book on our book easel). The book has lots of easy-to-understand information about vehicles of all kinds.
- Roadwork by Sally Sutton is a fun book that features repetition, rhyme, and onomatopoeias.
- Roadwork pages from The Big Book of Things That Go by DK (a great book for vehicle lovers).
Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:
- The Ultimate Construction Site Book is perfect for children who love little details and are able to handle moving parts, since this book has over 60 lift-the-flaps, pop-ups, and pull-tabs. My 5-year-old grandson, Caleb, is in love with it!

- Building Landmarks – Bridges, Tunnels and Landmarks

I printed these half size, but you can print them the original size.
Building Bridges Book with Build a Bridge Activity
Building Bridges has many fun STEM ideas for bridge building along with information about many types of bridges.
Free Printable: Bridge Building STEM Challenge by Spivey Sparks at TPT
I placed LEGO bricks and Q-tips in baskets on the tray for making bridges. My 5-year-old grandson, Caleb, made a LEGO bridge independently shortly after I put this work out! (You’ll find directions for making a Q-tip bridge here. Caleb is great at engineering work and will love this. I’ll add the glue using a hot-glue gun where he shows me. Elementary-age kids on up could use the glue gun independently.) The bridge-building materials can be changed throughout the unit.
Pages from National Geographic Kids First Big Book of Things That Go with Roadwork Materials in the Background
You can see pages from National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Things That Go (the book on our book easel). The book has lots of easy-to-understand information about vehicles of all kinds. See below for information about the roadwork materials in the background.
Sand Writing Tray for a Road Construction Unit
Free Printables /r/ for roadwork (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber). They come in print, D’Nealian, and cursive.
You’ll see a variety of simple letter writing trays in my previous unit study posts. I often used the wooden tray from the Melissa & Doug Lace and Trace Shapes. You can use whatever tray or container work best for you, though.
The sandpaper letters I use are available in print or cursive.
I typically now use this lovely spelling/alphabet tray from FamilyTreeWW on Etsy. I like it for writing more than one letter or spelling words. (Note: If that sand tray is currently unavailable, you’ll find lots of other options for Montessori sand trays on Etsy.)

For preschoolers who are working on phonograms, you could just use the “dge” cards for the child to read. For elementary-age kids, this is an activity that can help them understand spelling better and become familiar with the spelling rules for “ge” and “dge.”
We used this printable in our nocturnal animal unit as well.

The road sign alphabet cards can be used to spell the words on the large road signs or construction vehicle cards.
Working with Construction Words and Read Build Write Board

We used the Read Build Write Board from the Mirus Toys shop (also available on Etsy).
Check out my review of Mirus Toys to see a fun way we used the Read Build Write Board when Caleb was younger.

Bulldozer Addition Activity
Free Printable: bulldozer number cards 1-30 and addition symbols (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber).
Free Printable: Montessori Numeral Layout by Mindful Montessori Me at TPT
I cut the numeral layout into individual cards to use for making the sum at the end of the equation.
Besides 30 rocks, I added a small Tonka bulldozer (which I love because it’s inexpensive while still a sturdy die-cast truck), Multicraft tray, and bead bars (to reinforce the number at the end).
For the activity, Caleb used the bulldozer and pushed as many rocks as possible with one push from the main pile. He pushed 15 rocks. He again pushed as many rocks as possible from the main pile and got 8. Then he added the two piles of rocks. You can use a smaller number of rocks for children first working with addition or simply counting the number of rocks instead of adding them.
There are so many different activities you can prepare using the math cards! You’ll find many ideas in our previous units.
Shelf with Roadwork Materials, Book, and Pages

The Construction Vehicle and Job Matchup Cards are just a small part of the Construction Site Bundle for preschool through early elementary from Every Star Is Different. It’s a great resource! You can read about it here.
On the easel are roadwork pages from The Big Book of Things That Go by DK (a great book for vehicle lovers).
