“Establishing lasting peace is the work of education; all politics can do is keep us out of war.” Maria Montessori
A peace corner is perfect for homes as well as schools. It can be used for conflict resolution, encouraging a peaceful environment, and instilling peaceful habits and attitudes in children. A peace corner (whether or not it’s actually in a corner) is commonly found in both Montessori schools and Montessori homeschools.

Note: The peace lily is the number one plant for improving air quality: 10 Houseplants for Clean Air and Eco Kids from Organic Aspirations. Additional note: the peace lily is poisonous if ingested, so you shouldn’t have one if your child might try to eat it (unless it’s out of reach).
Shining Mountains Press has a great reminder of the important role parents play in encouraging peace: Parents Model Peaceful Behavior.

Thanks, jj! A peace corner is an amazing idea, isn’t it?!
Just found your blog by accident and I have used it a lot already! We decided to start homeschooling last week and your site has been a wealth of information. I just wanted to note that if parents like myself wanted to start using more house plants that the peace lily is poisonous for children.
Thanks so much for your kind comment, Joanna! And thanks for the information about the peace lily. I’ll add it to my post. π
