Montessori-Inspired Color Activities Using Yarn Balls and Free Printables

January 27, 2014 By Deb Chitwood

Montessori-Inspired Color Activities Using Yarn Balls and Free Printables

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Spielgaben. All opinions are honest and my own. This post contains Montessori Services affiliate links at no cost to you.

Today, I’m excited to share some free printables and Montessori-inspired activities that can be used with Spielgaben yarn balls.

Montessori-Inspired Color Activities Using Spielgaben Yarn Balls and Free Printables

These activities could be adapted for a variety of materials. The yarn balls are the Froebel Gift #1. You’ll find an amazing variety of ways to use the Spielgaben yarn balls in the resource materials that come with each complete Spielgaben set.

Yarn Balls and Shape Creation Cards Basket

For example, the yarn balls and shape creation cards basket from my original Spielgaben review post uses images from one of the resource worksheets. I’m adding to those ideas today by sharing some free printables from around the blogosphere and ideas for using Spielgaben in a Montessori-friendly environment.

Color Tablets and Yarn Ball Matching

This activity uses the free Color Matching Cards from Montessori Print Shop. I used a small willow basket from Montessori Services.

(Note: for home use, I would just use the Montessori Print Shop printable rather than purchasing color tablets. You can find presentation ideas here: DIY Color Tablets.) I like adding the yarn balls after an initial introduction to colors using the color tablets alone. The yarn balls are uniform in size and shape, so they fit well with the Montessori principle of isolation of quality. The yarn balls have an appealing texture and are a great extension to Montessori color tablets.)

I put the layout on a large hemmed work rug from Montessori Services.

Color Tablets, Spanish Colors, and Yarn Ball Matching

For this activity, I used the free Spanish/English Color Matching Cards from Homeschool Creations along with the above color tablets from Montessori Print Shop.

Here’s a cute free Color Sequence Caterpillar printable from Made by The Teacher. (Note: The Color Sequence Caterpillar printable is no longer available. You could use the head from The Very Hungry Caterpillar Sequence printable by Teacher Love and colored circles from the Printable Color Chart by Preschool Mom.) I used an an elliptical bamboo basket from Montessori Services and an inexpensive wooden tray from Michaels craft store.

Yarn Color Puzzles and Yarn Ball Matching

This activity uses a free Yarn Color Puzzle printable from Confessions of a Homeschooler. You can cut the puzzles in a way that makes them simple or difficult to put together. I stored the yarn balls in an elliptical bamboo basket and the puzzle pieces in a smaller bamboo potato basket from Montessori Services. Both baskets are on an inexpensive wooden tray from Michaels craft store.

Spielgaben Educational Toy Review

Version 4 of Spielgaben Educational Toys

I highly recommend Spielgaben as an amazing educational material for home or school. Even though the toys aren’t inexpensive, they’re definitely worth the price because of the high quality of materials and number of years your children or students can use them.

This post came at a perfect time! We recently received our Spielgaben set and I’ve started to look through some of the PDF materials. We did our first activity with the colored balls last week that my kids really loved. I can’t wait to dive further into our Spielgaben in the upcoming weeks and months!

Thank you, as always, for sharing so many wonderful ideas and resources. I have stopped by often but have not taken the time to comment much lately, so I just wanted to say Happy Hew Year and thank you for all you do!
