Autumn is such a fun time of year! We already have a post with favorite books for a fall theme. Many of those same books are here, although this year I’m focusing on favorite books for a general fall theme but ones that are perfect for our fall scavenger hunt unit. They especially focus on autumn leaves and general autumn themes that work well in both Europe (where the term “autumn” is used more than “fall”) and North America.

Just choose books based on your child’s age and what you think will engage your child’s interest. I recommend checking out the “Read Sample” feature on Amazon and reading reviews there. Another place to learn about a book is on YouTube. You can typically see the entire book there.
Montessori-friendly books use photos or realistic illustrations. They don’t have talking animals or a lot of fantasy. But many books that have fantasy and talking animals are wonderful books, and I love sharing them with children who understand the difference between fantasy and reality.
For toddlers and preschoolers, about ¾ of the books I use are typically Montessori friendly (focusing on reality without smiling or talking animals or smiling or talking vehicles).
Books for an Autumn Theme
Books for an Autumn Theme
I’m featuring books here for an autumn theme for preschoolers through elementary-age kids (with a couple of books for toddlers as well).
Top Shelf of Forward -Facing Display:
- The beautiful Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn is from an amazing series that is part of my permanent seasonal book collection. It’s a Montessori-friendly book that tells the story of a girl who walks through forest and town, welcoming the signs of autumn.
- When Fall Comes: Connecting with Nature as the Days Grow Shorter (lovely!)
- Autumn Is Here!
2nd Shelf:
- Hello, Fall! is the sweet story of a girl and her grandfather welcoming fall.
- We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt

- Awesome Autumn: All Kinds of Fall Facts and Fun with lots of beautiful photographs and easy-to-understand information, along with some fall crafts.
- Why Do Leaves Change Color? has lots of easy-to-understand information about leaves, including images of many types of leaves.
4th Shelf:
- Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf
- In the Middle of Fall
- How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World isn’t a Montessori-style book, but it’s a fun, whimsical way to add some geography to an apple- or fall unit. There’s a world map in the back of the book.
Bottom Shelf
- Leaf Man (great book for inspiring creative activities with autumn leaves)
- Sophie’s Squash (a very sweet, Montessori-friendly fiction book)
- Autumn (beautiful wordless board book that’s part of a 4-season collection)
