Montessori Addition and Subtraction Resources for Preschool through Early Elementary

September 24, 2018 By Deb Chitwood

Helping your child or students understand and learn math facts such as addition and subtraction is so much easier with Montessori materials. Every Star Is Different has some Montessori addition and subtraction printables that work perfectly with Montessori materials (purchased or DIY) for preschool through early elementary.

Montessori Bead Bar Addition Clip Card Layout with DIY Owl Clothespins

Montessori Bead Bar Addition Clip Card Layout with DIY Owl Clothespins

There are a number of ways you can use the bead bar addition clip cards. For interest and to fit with a theme, I often like to decorate the clothespins. These DIY owl clothespins took about 2 minutes to prepare! I just used owl felt stickers I had from an activity another year! There are felt stickers available for many themes! Sometimes I also use small themed buttons on clothespins like I did for our bee unit. It’s always helpful to add a color coding dot to the proper place on the back of each card as a control of error.

My bead bars, which I love, are from Alison’s Montessori. You can get bead bars on Amazon, although I haven’t personally used materials from those companies.

You can also do the traditional bead stair layout before completing the bead bar addition clip card. I used the number and symbol cards from the Montessori Addition and Subtraction Bundle to form the equation at the end. Just adapt the activity for your child’s age and ability level.

Using Montessori Golden Bead Material to Complete a 4-Digit Static Addition Problem

Using Montessori Golden Bead Material to Complete a 4-Digit Static Addition Problem

The Montessori golden bead work is amazing for helping children understand the decimal system! You can use the printables a variety of ways, but Zoey is practicing writing numerals correctly, so I used the printables for a writing activity that Zoey could take home. Here, she’s completing a 4-digit static addition problem.

My individual golden beads are from Alison’s Montessori (see my review). The wooden hundred squares and thousand cubes are actually from Nienhuis Montessori back when I owned a Montessori school in the 1980s. For some reason, I always kept those!

We also used the printables to work with 4-digit dynamic addition. If you have a child in early elementary, you can extend the work with printables in the pack for Dynamic Addition with Numbers through 9,999,999!

Zoey loves miniature books, so I made the addition strips into a mini book. The answers go from 9-18. If your child is working with dynamic addition, you can have him or her exchange 10 units for a ten bar where needed. I have a pencil for the work, although you could laminate the booklet and use an erasable crayon or marker.

This is similar except that it adds 3 single-digit numbers. There are options with or without exchanging.

Tray with Subtraction Strips and Safari Ltd Good Luck Mini Pandas

Tray with Subtraction Strips and Safari Ltd Good Luck Mini Pandas

Zoey loves miniature objects, so we often use a variety of objects for math work (as well as language work). We used these pandas during our panda unit. Amazon has a variety of Safari Ltd. Good Luck Minis. Some of them are reasonably priced and others are outrageously priced. A great place to get them for a reasonable price is Alison’s Montessori.

I made the subtraction strips into a mini book. These all take away 9 pandas. I have a pencil for the child to write the answers, although you could laminate the booklet and use an erasable crayon or marker.
